Why Food Matters to Me: The Connection Between Home, Financial Wellness, and Homeownership

Food may seem unrelated to mortgages, but for me they are connected because while mortgages help people buy houses, my work has always been about helping people create homes filled with connection, family, wellness, and lasting memories.

Mortgage agent Stephanie Cortese shares why food, family, financial wellness, and homeownership are deeply connected—and why they all have a place in her business.

Why Food Matters to Me — And Why It Has a Place in My Business

By Stephanie Cortese

I'll admit it.

It may not be the most conventional thing to see someone talking about mortgages, financial wellness, and homeownership one day, then sharing a recipe, a family meal, or what's growing in their garden the next.

At first glance, those topics may not seem connected. After all, what does food have to do with mortgages?

For me, everything.

Because while my profession is being a mortgage agent, my passion has always been helping people build better lives. Food, home, health, family, and finances are all part of the same story.

Because while mortgages are about houses, my work has always been about helping people create homes.

A home is where traditions are built, conversations happen, milestones are celebrated, and memories are made. It's where life unfolds.

Growing up in an Italian family, food was never just food.

It was connection.

It was conversation.

It was gathering around the table after a long day.

It was recipes passed down through generations and meals made with love.

Some of my best memories happened around a kitchen table, and the older I get, the more I realize those moments weren't really about what was being served. They were about belonging, community, and creating a life that felt meaningful.

As an educator, author, mom, and mortgage agent, I've carried those lessons with me throughout my life and career.

Many people don't realize that some of my work begins long before a mortgage application exists. I often work with individuals, couples, and families who dream of homeownership but aren't sure where to start. Whether they're first-time home buyers, working through debt management challenges, or simply trying to gain more financial confidence, the conversation often starts well before we discuss rates or lenders.

Sometimes the first conversation isn't about a mortgage at all.

It's about habits.

It's about goals.

It's about financial education.

It's about creating a plan.

It's about helping people move from where they are to where they want to be.

I've always believed that financial wellness and physical wellness are more connected than we think.

When life feels chaotic, our finances often do too. When we're exhausted or overwhelmed, it's harder to make intentional decisions. We put things off, rely on convenience, avoid difficult conversations, and tell ourselves we'll deal with it later.

The same habits that impact our health can impact our finances.

That's why my approach has never been solely about finding a mortgage rate. It's about helping people build a stronger foundation, create a clear mortgage planning strategy, and feel confident in the decisions they're making for themselves and their families.

A mortgage is one piece of a much bigger picture.

Food also represents something else that is incredibly important to me: connection.

Some of the best conversations happen over a cup of coffee or around a dinner table. I've watched complete strangers become friends and families reconnect simply by sharing a meal.

That's why you'll often see food, coffee, local events, and recipes woven into what I do.

Because people connect with people before they connect with products or services.

And when people feel comfortable, real conversations happen.

Conversations about dreams.

Conversations about challenges.

Conversations about money.

Conversations about home.

At the end of the day, a mortgage is simply a tool.

While mortgages are about houses, the real goal has always been the home—the life, memories, traditions, and opportunities created inside it.

It's the birthday parties.

The Sunday morning pancakes.

The holiday dinners.

The backyard barbecues.

The family traditions.

The kitchen table conversations.

The memories.

As someone who takes a holistic approach to life and business, I don't believe we can separate our finances from the rest of who we are. Our health, habits, relationships, homes, and even the food we share all play a role in shaping the life we're creating.

So yes, you'll continue to see recipes on my page.

You'll continue to see gardening updates.

You'll continue to see conversations about wellness, family, community, and food alongside mortgage education.

Because while it may not be conventional, it's authentic.

It's who I am.

And the values that food represents—connection, family, community, education, hospitality, and wellness—are the same values that guide how I serve my clients every day.

After all, mortgages help people buy houses.

But it's the life we create inside them that truly matters.
